Emigrated 1632 from Great Mundon, co.Hertford, Eng. Freeman, Newton, MA 1632; John Clarke probably served in the Pequot War; war committee for Saybrook 1653-54; Deputy Saybrook 1649-63; Deputy Milford 1665; Patentee, Royal Charter 1662; Judge Saybrook 1664; Judge Milford 1665.
     Probably came in the ELIZABETH from Ipswich, co.Suffolk,ENG Apr 1634/ Res. Hartford prior to Saybrook. Homelot 1639-40 on West side of Highway from Seth Grant's to Centinal Hill, now Trumbull Street. Juror at Hartford 1641-42. Deputy 1649.
Will recorded at New Haven dated 17 Feb 1672 at the beginning and 19 Jan 1673 at the end. Inv. 28 Feb 1673.
     Was interpreter when the Montowese Indians sold their land to the English. He had lived about 4 yrs. in MA before he came to Quinnipiac with its first planters. In 1642 was sergeant; owned the lot on the easterly corner of Brattle and Masons Sts in 1635 Cambridge, MA which he sold to Edward Winship
and removed to Hartford. Listed in Cambridge in 1633. Rec. 4 1/2 acres 1632 Cambridge division of land.

1 Mar 1635/6 Agreed with John Clarke, Cambridge to make a sufficient weir to catch alewives upon Menotomies Rever in the bounds of this town, before 12 Apr next, and shall sell and deliver unto the inhabitants of the town and no other except for bait, all the alewives he shall take at 3/6 per 1000 and shall at all times give such notice to the person tthat shall be appointed to fetch them away as he shall be directed.
