the births of 3 chil. are recorded. He afterwards lived some time in
Watertown, whither he probably returned upon the outbreak of King
Philip's War. His Will, dated Ap. 17, 1713, mentions several children,
whose birthsare not recorded, and the order of their births has not been
ascertained."
MARR: From Allan Green (allagreen@aol.com) "Joshua, the first of
the childrenborn to John and Elinor in this country...married 3 times,
the first time sometime between 1656 and 1665 to a Lydia ____, with 2
children, the first of which was born in 1666. The second marriage was ca
1669, to a Mary, and this union seemingly produced no children. The third
wife was Abigail Tarbell on 30Sep 1672, with 8 children."; NEHG Register

HISTORY: Quoted From Pierce, p.24-26
Joshua Whitney was the first of the family who was born in America.
He was one of the earliest settlers, a deacon and original proprietorat
Groton, MA, and dwelt there probably until it was burnt by the Indians,
during King Philip's War, in the spring of 1676. He returned to Watertown
fora few years and died in 1719. His will is dated 4/17/1718 and proved
10/6/1719. It mentions several children whose births are not recorded. He
was buriedin the old burying ground in Groton. He served as a soldier in
King Philip'sWar with his son, Joshua, Jr., in 1691-2.
From the various works on Groton, compiled by that able historian,
Hon. Samuel A. Green, of Boston, I [Pierce] glean the following relating
to Dea. Whitney: In 1681, '83, '84 and '87, he waselected one of the
selectmen. In 1680 he was selected one of the board to arrange matters
pertaining to the meeting house; 1684 Joshua Whitney elected
"constibell"; 1690 Joshua Whitney elected to tithing-man; 1685 "Joshiway"
Whitney selected at the town meeting as a ffeus newers; 1683 elected
overseer ofhighway; 1701 was chairman of the committee to heat the
meeting house; 1702 was again elected selectman. Groton, 4/22/1715 at a
churgh meeting: Whereas, Deacon Whitney is old, and desirous of the
choice of another to officiate in his place, and whereas Dea. John
Farnsworth is desirous of a new choice, unless he were unanimously
confirmed, the church did therupon unanimously elect, or make choice of
Simon Stone and Thomas Tarbele, to officiate as deacons in the church of
Groton. Joshuay Whitney have payd for his land which he did purchis of
the Town Comity in the yer 1683, and inst sum of twellve schillins for
twelve ackers of land. I say payd for acording too order for the us of
theTown. By Jonathan Mors, Clark.
