Individual Note:
     Samuel came to the New World as part of a group called "Mr. Hooker'sCompany" who preceded their minister, Thomas Hooker to the Mass. BayColony. Theysettled in Newtown ans Dorchester where they farmed forseveral years. However, there were concerns over land limitations andsecure titles and there was a desire for a more open conception of thechurch than most Puritans in Mass. accepted. In 1635 people from 3Mass. towns followed Hooker to sparsely settled areas of the Conn.valley. Samuel Allen and others from Dorcester founded the community ofWindsor. There they could work the land and follow Hooker's democraticprinciples, so radical during that era. The next 4 generations werepioneers who settled, raised their large families and moved on, often tothe frontier, a tradion Ethan continued.

     Samuel Allen came to America aboard the "Mary and Joseph", whichembarked Plymouth, Devonshire, England, March 20, 1630 and arrivedNantucket, Mass. May 30, "without casualty" and settled in Dorchester.5 years later moved to Windsor, Conn.
