Note for:   Andrew Newcombe,   ABT 1640 - 20 Aug 1706         Index

Individual Note:
Andrew was residing at the Isles of Shoals,Maine as early as july
1666,with his first wife Sarah, on this date he attended a meeting at the
Isle of Shoals near Portsmouth, NH of several men engaged in fisheries,
for the purpose of fixing the price of fish. The Isle of Shoals,
consisted of two islands, Hog Island and Smutty Nose called Georges part
or northerly part of the group. About 1629 the southerly half of Shoals
was reclaimed from Mass. and annexed to NH.

In 1669, Daniel Moore of Portsmouth sold Andrew Newcomb of Kittery a
dwelling house in Kittery. This place was on the southeast side of the
mouth of Spinney Creek, and bounded westerly by the Piscatagua River,
about a half-mile from the city of Portsmouth.
Sarah died about 1674 and Andrew married Anna Bayes in 1675.
Mr Newcomb moved from Kittery in 1674 or 1675, he took his seven young
and motherless children to a more favorable locality, for it it seems the
Indians had become troublesome in Kittery, as King Philip's war broke out
in June of 1675. He settled in Edgartown, on the Island of Martha's
Vineyard, the same year where he became a proprietor. He was a prominent
citizen, as shown by the fact that he was foreman of a grand jury,
constable, tithing man, select man, overseer, etc.

Andrew was made a Lieut. in the Militia April 13, 1691 and was in command
of fortifications.
